Why do the tips of your finger nails turn white?

Your nails are clear. They appear pink because they are pressed against your skin, and when they grow, the tips are not against the skin and there is air underneath, causing them to look white.Why do the tips of your finger nails turn white?
The rest of your finger nail is attached to your finger so once it grows away form your finger it just naturally turns white.Why do the tips of your finger nails turn white?
That's the bit which is not connected to you skin your whole nail would look like that if it was pulled off, the pink bit is your finger.
